Greetings! I’m Frieda, a pseudonymous 40-something wife and working mother of two young children. I started The Frugal Freeway because I love reading about personal finance and have a natural tendency toward simple living (hence the “Frugal” part of this website’s name), but I live in an expensive area of Los Angeles (hence the “Freeway” part) where that can be really difficult.
I like to joke that I’m already too old to be early retired. In any case, I don’t necessarily want to quit my professional job and travel the world, and neither does my husband. Many of my favorite personal finance writers are able to keep their expenses down by living in low cost-of-living areas, or by having no more than one kid. We have two kids and a big mortgage, so that’s not me. But I do want to inject some of that awesome early-retirement mindset into the spendy Southern California lifestyle. We love the area we live in but recognize that there are major tradeoffs to living here, such as high housing costs, white-knuckle commutes, and a bit of a rat-race atmosphere.
The Frugal Freeway is my attempt to think through some of the pressing personal finance decisions and issues in my life, and I hope you’ll share your experiences and concerns as well by commenting me or emailing me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thanks, and happy reading!
